Day 11: When you're waiting

I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
    out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
    making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.
Psalm 40: 1-3

This is one of my favorite passages, and not just because of the U2 song. As a friend pointed out to me, this passage by David records one action: he waited patiently. Then look at what God does:

He inclined.

He heard.

He drew him up.

Made his steps secure.

Gave David a new song.

Then many will put their trust in the Lord.

All that - and our job is just to wait. God takes action. While we're waiting, in the silence, God is taking action. Waiting and "no" are answers too. God's timing is perfect. In the chaos, you're right where you need to be. God has the big picture. We do not.

Waiting is so hard. I have waited. I've cried out to God. I've been depressed and lonely and at an end. I haven't heard from God, and for years I stopped believing that he is good. But he is. And he's working.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
    “therefore I will hope in him.”
The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
    to the soul who seeks him.
It is good that one should wait quietly
    for the salvation of the Lord.
Lamentations 3:22-26

What are you waiting for?

Let God know what you need. He hears you.
